Sacerdote-caudillo de la Escandinavia precristiana.

El culto a los dioses nórdicos estaba organizado en torno a ellos. En Islandia, donde no había rey, se convirtieron en la clase gobernante. Dominaban la asamblea islandesa, dictaban las leyes y designaban los jueces. Cuando Islandia fue convertida al cristianismo 1000, controlaron la organización de la nueva religión. Muchos de ellos construyeron iglesias y algunos fueron ordenados sacerdotes.
